Flat Deerheads Featured in Whitetails Unlimited Magazine

February 19, 2011

Highlights from the Latest Whitetails Unlimited Magazine

Flat Deerheads has had the privilege of being featured in some of the nation’s most popular outdoor magazines.  We are proud to add Whitetails Unlimited magazine to the list.  They are featuring FlatDeerheads.com in the “Product Review” section of their spring 2011 edition.

The article provides a detailed product description and addresses some of the most common questions we receive about our flagship wall graphic products.  “What is a Flat Deerhead?” is one of our most common questions.  The article describes the material we use and provides information on available sizes.  We love that it not only explains what a wall graphic is, but also offers suggestions for where and how to hang.  We also have to give the author extra points for mentioning the “man cave” which is, in our opinion, the best place to hang a Flat Deerheads wall graphic**.

While we loved seeing Flat Deerheads products in print, we also enjoyed the variety of news articles and features the issue had to offer.  Our favorite was “Apples that Didn’t Fall Far from the Tree” by Jerry Lambert.  It tells three separate stories, each about a father sharing his passion for deer hunting with the next generation.  Each story illustrates that for many fathers, sons, and daughters, hunting is more than sport.  It’s a legacy, a complex skill, and an experience to share with loved ones.  These are the types of stories that encourage us to enjoy the experience and treasure the memories.  Here at Flat Deerheads, we often receive photos of fathers with sons, daughters, and trophies, but we rarely get to hear the stories that go along with them.  I have to say, it’s nice to hear the details for a change.

Whitetails Unlimited members can check out the Flat Deerheads product review, “Apples that Didn’t Fall Far from the Tree”, and much more in the spring issue of Whitetails Unlimited magazine.

** Congratulations! You found the the first answer for the Breaking Cabin Fever scavenger hunt.  The answer is “man cave.”

Now head on over to Something’s Fishy and answer this question:

“What type of knot is used by saltwater anglers when connecting single strand wire leader to tackle?”

2011 Big Buck!

January 19, 2011

Check out this monster courtesy of Steve Shannon.  Steve has a private farm with several Cuddeback trail cameras situated throughout the property.  Steve had been watching this buck for most of the summer and into the fall.  He amassed over 400 trail cam shots of this buck, including when he was in velvet.  The buck disappeared for a while but started showing up in a new area on December 29, 2010.

During the two week period between the 29th and when he was harvested,  he started showing up earlier and earlier each afternoon.  On the final few days the photos were taken in broad daylight.  Steve theorizes that he had two other  4 1/2 year old bucks (one an 8-point in the 140’s, the other a 10-point in the 150’s) that were more dominate.  They started showing up at 4:15 PM just after the first of the year.  During that period they were there frequently and kept leaving earlier, opening a window for this buck to slip in for a bite to eat.  The night of January 8, 2011, Steve passed on both of the younger bucks between 4:15 and 4:45 pm.  At 5:05 PM this buck showed up and Steve took him down.

Steve aged him at 6 1/2 years old.  What really makes this buck’s rack  unique are the paddles at the end of the main beam.  This is Steve’s ninth Ohio Big Buck Club qualifier.  Congratulations Steve!

Flat Deerheads at the ATA Show

January 11, 2011

Last week, Indianapolis hosted The Archery Trade Association (ATA) trade show.  For those who aren’t familiar, it’s the industry trade show where hunting industry professionals gather to check out the latest bow hunting, archery, and outdoor gear. Flat Deerheads participated as an exhibitor but also took the opportunity to chat with professional sportsmen and explore what’s hot for 2011.

First, it’s important to note that the ATA show is HUGE.  In fact, it’s the archery and bow hunting industry’s largest and longest-running trade show.  It’s a member-driven event designed to promote commerce within the  industry. The show, which is owned and operated by the ATA, is closed to the public and is an order writing event.  Over 7,000 shop owners and exhibitors were in attendance this year.

We had a busy weekend at The FlatDeerheads.com booth.  It was a great opportunity to talk with fellow outdoor enthusiasts and collect some feedback on our product line.  Several visitors commented that our Flat Deerheads wall graphics are a great alternative to expensive taxidermy mounts.

“This product is a no-brainer.  I can’t believe I didn’t think of it.”

Remember Ambre?

December 1, 2010

Someone’s getting a great holiday gift.  Remember our recent post about Ambre’s 10-point-buck?  We finished her giclee yesterday and it looks great!  We hope you love it Ambre.

Ambre’s 10-Point Buck

November 17, 2010

We’re getting some really great photos here at FlatDeerheads.com.  Check out this great photo from Steve Shannon.  He and his wife, Ambre were having a “date night” hunting on their farm in Licking County, Ohio.  Normally they hunt together but this time they were each working different areas.  At 4:40 PM Ambre saw this 130″,10-point buck chasing a doe.  Armed with a Stryker crossbow, she unleashed a Spitfire broadhead and took him down.  Ambre has only been hunting for 5 years and this is her 4th buck over 130″!  This is the first time she’s taken one all by herself.  Congratulations Ambre!  We hope you love your FlatDeerhead!

Big Changes at FlatDeerheads.com

November 9, 2010

We are excited to introduce the NEW FlatDeerheads.com!  We’ve made several visual and functional upgrades to the site, as well as new additions to the product line.  Sharing your outdoor adventures is easier than ever!

The new FlatDeerheads.com offers a number of updates, including a more streamlined, order process with on-screen cropping.  We’ve shortened and simplified the order process, so that you can spend less time online and more time enjoying the great outdoors.

Additional new features include our “Customer Gallery” and “News” sections.  Get inspiration and cool customization ideas by browsing through our most recent work or get the scoop on Flat Deerheads by exploring our news links.

In addition to enhancing the online experience, we’ve also added two varieties of giclée wraps to our custom memorabilia mix.  We print your image digitally on gloss canvas and stretch around a wood frame to create our standard giclée wrap.

Users can purchase the standard wrap as is or upgrade to an artist’s embellished giclée wrap.  The artist’s version features hand applied brush strokes, embellishment, and highlights from our in-house artist.  The end result transforms your image into an original work of art.  Artist’s embellished giclée wraps are ideal for offices, dens, and family rooms, and work beautifully with landscape photos.

Capturing the Perfect Outdoor Photo

November 5, 2010

We’ve seen our share of outdoor photos here at FlatDeerheads.com.  The hunting community never fails to amaze us with trophy shots, landscape and scenery shots, safari shots, and trail camera pictures.  In fact, every once in a while, we receive a photo that is absolutely breathtaking, perfect in every way, and completely defines what inspired us to create FlatDeerheads.com.

Numerous elements go into capturing a breathtaking outdoor photo.  In his article, How to Create the Complete Outdoor Image,  Adam Barker lists superb light, engaging subject matter, and dynamic composition as essential outdoor photography elements.  He goes on to discuss how balance among these elements produces the complete visual package.  Although FlatDeerheads.com focuses heavily on trophy shots, we often receive outdoor wildlife and landscape scenery images that work beautifully on our canvas products.  The tips listed in Barker’s article are ideal for the outdoor enthusiast who is looking to capture a timeless outdoor scene on canvas.

We realize that although landscape and wildlife images are intriguing, many of you are more interested in capturing the perfect “grip-n-grin” shot.  Don Dubuc, an experienced outdoorsman and columnist, shares his outdoor photography tips in his article, Tips for Better Fish & Game Photos, he tackles issues such as lighting, background, and expression.  Check out the complete article and test out Dubuc’s tips on your next Flat Deerheads wall graphic photo.

We hope these tips are helpful on your next  excursion.  We can’t wait to see what you come up with!  Share your photos and photography tips on our Facebook page.  Happy hunting!
